What is TAS?

When you begin your academic journey with us, you will build knowledge and skills in emerging technologies while examining their social, cultural, and ethical impacts, including artificial intelligence (AI). You will work directly with your faculty across undergraduate and graduate programs.

Program Overview

Our department offers structured academic tracks for both undergraduate and graduate levels:

  • Undergraduate Specializations: Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICT4D), Computer Science (CS), and Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS).
  • Master's Program: Prepares students to manage technical operations and process systems in global organizations.
  • Doctoral Program: Focuses on how technology shapes society, preparing researchers and decision-makers for roles in industry, government, and education.

As the department transitions into the Department of Technology, AI, and Society (DTAS), our curriculum focuses on how AI systems affect work, institutions, and public life, and how intelligent technologies can be designed responsibly.

Core Competencies

Our programs equip students with critical competencies to thrive globally at the intersection of technology, AI, and society across three academic levels:

Undergraduate Level

Practical technical capabilities in AI systems, data infrastructure, and emerging technologies, combined with foundational awareness of their social impacts.

Master's Level

Strategic project management, problem-solving, and operational decision-making competencies to address complex algorithmic, technical, and organizational challenges.

Doctoral Level

Advanced expertise in technology policy, public frameworks, and ethical governance to lead research, shape policy, and guide decision-making in an AI-powered world.

Areas of Focus

Responsible & Trustworthy AI

Research on fairness, transparency, accountability, and governance of AI systems to ensure intelligent technologies align with societal values and operate reliably.

Human-Centered AI & Decision Support

Designing AI tools that augment human capabilities, support expert decision-making, and improve outcomes in fields such as healthcare, science, and public policy.

AI & the Future of Work

Studying how AI technologies transform jobs, organizations, and economic structures, ensuring intelligent systems enhance productivity while supporting meaningful work.

AI, Policy, & Democratic Institutions

Examining how governments, legal frameworks, and institutions guide the development and deployment of AI to encourage public trust and social benefit.

AI Systems, Data, & Infrastructure

Analyzing computing platforms, data infrastructure, and edge technologies regarding their implications for privacy, sustainability, and society.

AI for Social Impact

Applying AI technologies directly to address major societal challenges, including health disparities, education, climate change, and public safety.
